What is the Journalistic Conditional?
The condizionale giornalistico (journalistic conditional), also called condizionale di dissociazione, is the conditional tense that is typically used in journalism to report information and to suggest that the information reported is uncertain.
It is called condizionale di dissociazione in Italian because it allows journalists to dissociate from the source: they deliver the news but cautiously distance themselves from it.
It is like if there were a sort of distance between the speaker and the statement given the fact that the piece of news has not been verified yet.
Condizionale di Dissociazione
How to Form
To form the condizionale giornalistico we need the condizionale presente (present conditional) or the condizionale passato (past conditional) of the verb, depending on when something is believed to have happened.
The present conditional is used to report unconfirmed information, speculations, or events that are happening or are supposed to happen in the present or future.
Secondo gli scienziati, il terremoto si espanderebbe fino al nord.
According to scientists, the earthquake will spread to the north.
Secondo un funzionario dell’Onu, nella regione ci sarebbero molte vittime.
According to a UN official, there are many victims in the region.
The present conditional implies that the reported action or event is still relevant, current, or expected to occur. It is basically providing a sense of immediacy.
The past conditional, instead, is used to report unconfirmed information or speculations about events that supposedly happened in the past.
Secondo alcune fonti, ci sarebbe stata un’altra esplosione.
According to some sources, there was another explosion.
Secondo alcune testimonianze, il giovane avrebbe rotto il finestrino di un’auto parcheggiata.
According to some witness reports, the young man smashed the window of a parked car.
The past conditional provides a sense of past time and completed action, indicating that the event is alleged to have already taken place, but without confirmation.
How to Translate
Let me show you an example to better understand how to translate the condizionale di dissociazione:
Ci sarebbe stato un ennesimo attentato in Iraq.
Lit. There would have been another attack in Iraq.
As you can guess, the literal translation does not really make sense in English.
While in Italian we use the condizionale passato, in English we have to use a periphrasis, namely a combination of one or more words that convey a meaning.
English alternatives can be:
- Allegedly
- Reportedly
- According to x
- X is believed to
- X is said to
Let me show you some examples:
La ragazza avrebbe 15 anni e una vita difficile.
The girl is said to be 15 and to have a difficult life.
Il dottore sarebbe stato licenziato a causa della sua condotta.
The doctor is believed to have been fired due to his behavior.
Il presidente della squadra starebbe pensando di esonerare l’allenatore.
The team president is reportedly thinking of firing the coach.
La terapia di coppia avrebbe abbassato la percentuale dei divorzi annui del 5%.
Couples therapy allegedly lowered the annual divorce rate by 5%.
