Our Language App Review Process
Why We Review Language Apps
To cut through the noise
We are your language experts, ready to guide you through the language learning app jungle.
There are just so many options that it can feel like drowning in a sea of speculations and marketing. This is why we have taken the time to develop an organized and open review process to supply you with the best information.
To Give an Expert Opinion
As seasoned language learners, educators, and tech enthusiasts, our reviews are packed with years of wisdom. We have used so many different apps that we now know what works and what doesn’t. Our intention is to help you discover the resources that will aid you in your language learning journey.
How We Review Language Apps
We follow a rigorous and systematic review process to ensure all the apps are reviewed properly. Our approach is as follows:
Initial Walk-through
- Task: Use app for at least 15 minutes
- Result: We take screenshots with comments of the user experience
- Goal: Test the app name and icon to see how the usability and the design works for you at start stages.
Those first few minutes are vital. If an app can’t wow us then, it’s not going to win us over later.
Criteria-Based Review
We check the app against some of the main criteria to consider when choosing a language app to make sure it covers all aspects of both play and learning. While there are many criteria we could discuss, some of the most important are:
- Spaced Repetition: Does the app provide enough repetition to encourage use and be an effective method of acquiring vocabulary and grammar?
- Personalization: Does the app allow users to personalize the settings, the interface, or the content to better fit their needs?
- Content Quality: Are you learning, or are you just getting fluff and gamification in the interface and content?
- UI and Usability: Can you open the app and figure out what you need to do easily enough?
- Offline Access: Can the courses be accessed offline for easier learning?
Scoring
We calculate the overall score as follows:
70%
Course quality
20%
UX
10%
Price
No matter how catchy the user experience (UX) may be, an app won’t make you fluent if the courses are sloppy or the method is flawed.
Price is hardly an issue because what you pay in terms of money is but a tiny fraction of the cost to learn a language, which is mostly made up of the time you spend.
For example, we would never use a bad app, even for free, because it would never make a difference in our language skills and we’d waste an infinite amount of time on it.
In-Depth Review
We talk about each of the criteria at great length, drawing on our own first-hand experience with the app. This covers ratings as well as insights to provide a complete picture of an app for its pros and cons.
We just want you to get all the information you need in order to make an intelligent decision as we would for ourselves.
Conclusion
After the data is collected and all insight is filtered, we end our conclusion by giving our final verdict on how the app did. This is great for a quick first impression to see if the app will actually work for what you are looking to learn.
We thought it might save you time and energy to get a straight-to-the-point summary of how each app performed.
We Guarantee Quality and Honesty
We are committed to quality and honesty. We DO NOT get paid to write app reviews.
However, we admit that we’re biased. After giving 2,000+ classes and learning 12 languages, we won’t tell you that a bad app is “just ok if it suits your style.” We’ll tell you to steer clear of it.
