Biases in Pronunciation Learning
As an Italian tutor as well as learner of different foreign languages, I am often exposed to biases towards pronunciation, from my students as well as in my language learning path over the years.
Many students experience a self-imposed block in speaking practices because they are afraid of mispronunciation, or they tend to hide their accent which eventually leads to a decrease in intelligibility.
Research has shown that hard accents do not affect comprehension and intelligibility. However, foreign accents do influence the way speakers are perceived.
Heavily-accented speakers are seen more negatively than mild-accented ones because their speech is harder for listeners to process and triggers more negative affective reactions.
Despite this bias, I still believe that pronunciation is a level of language that should be included in classes and practiced.
Approaches to Teaching Pronunciation
Effective Pronunciation Techniques
Improving students’ pronunciation skills requires a multifaceted approach that combines traditional and innovative methods that must be tailored to meet the diverse needs of learners.
In the past, pronunciation was taught by merely focusing on the accurate production of individual speech sounds. Nowadays, instead, the focus switched to the communicative relevance of connected speech and the overall intelligibility.
Many traditional techniques remain effective, but new methods are now included to build a strong base for pronunciation skills.

Research emphasizes the effectiveness of using varied and engaging materials, like phonetic training, reading aloud, listen and repeat, rhyme and verse, rules and instructions, spelling and dictation, and ear training.
Not only do these methods enhance pronunciation accuracy, but they also promote fluency.
Adapting Pronunciation Instruction to Modern Needs
The shift of the last decades required teachers to make deliberate choices about the type of phonological structure to practice, the speech mode, the structural level of practice, the type of instruction, and the specific cognitive skills to enhance during practice.
Additional priority is now given to activities that raise phonological awareness and incorporate communicative activities, which reflects how important it is to integrate pronunciation practice into meaningful communication contexts.
Practical Techniques to Improve Pronunciation
Practical techniques that teachers can use to improve their students’ pronunciation skills include:
- Phonetic Training: Explicit instruction in the sounds of the language helps students understand the phonetic differences and nuances.
- Reading Aloud: Encourages students to practice pronunciation in a controlled yet meaningful context.
- Listen and Repeat: Traditional yet effective, this method helps students internalize correct pronunciation through repetition.
- Rhyme and Verse: Using poetry and songs to make learning pronunciation engaging and memorable.
- Rules and Instructions: Teaching the rules of pronunciation helps students apply them systematically.
- Awareness-Raising Activities: Activities that make students conscious of pronunciation differences and common errors.
- Spelling and Dictation: Connecting spelling with pronunciation to reinforce correct pronunciation.
- Ear Training: Enhances students’ ability to distinguish and produce different sounds.
- Communicative Activities: Integrating pronunciation practice into speaking activities to improve intelligibility in real communication.
A Comprehensive Approach to Pronunciation Teaching
In conclusion, a combination of creative and dynamic materials, systematic instruction, and both traditional and modern techniques is essential for effective pronunciation teaching.
This comprehensive approach not only enhances students’ pronunciation skills but also boosts their overall confidence and competence in using the language, preparing them for more effective communication in diverse contexts.
