“Every Time” in Italian

Ogni Volta che

Ogni is a very common and versatile word in Italian, which can be translated into “each“, “every, and “all.  In today’s lesson, you’re going to learn an expression with ogni: ogni volta che, which translates as “every time that”.

In English, we can just ignore the word “that”, but in Italian the relative pronoun “che” is mandatory to link one sentence to another.

Have a look at the example below:

Ogni volta che guardo quel film mi emoziono.

Every time I watch that movie, I get emotional.

This expression can go either at the beginning of both sentences of between the two, as in the example below:

Mi emoziono ogni volta che guardo quel film.

I get emotional every time I watch that movie.

How to Use “Ogni Volta Che” in Italian

As you saw, the structure is very simple:

sentence 1 +ogni volta che + sentence 2

or

ogni volta che + sentence 1 + sentence 2

Of course, in order for this structure to make sense, it needs to be used to link two sentences together, since “ogni volta che” introduces the condition for which something happens.

The verbs of the two sentences can be in the present, past, or future tense, as long as the tenses are logically related.

Examples

Now, let’s look at some examples in the past, present, and future:

Ogni volta che andavo in vacanza là mi divertivo.

Every time I went there on holiday, I had have fun.

Sporco tutta la cucina ogni volta che cucino.

I get the kitchen dirty every time I cook.

Io ci sarò ogni volta che avrai bisogno di me.

I will be there every time you’ll need me.
