How I test and score
I sift through the plethora of language apps, delivering reviews based on deep expertise in language learning and teaching.
My review process starts with an initial walk-through, using the app for at least 15 minutes to capture first impressions and usability.
I then conduct a criteria-based evaluation focusing on key features like spaced repetition, user customization, and the balance between educational content and gamification.
My reviews are thorough, with a scoring system that emphasizes course quality (70%) over user experience (20%) and price (10%).
Importantly, I do not receive payment for these reviews.

Intro
Hi everyone! Today I’m taking a closer look at the HelloTalk App. If you’ve ever wanted to practice Italian with native speakers without leaving your home, this app might have caught your attention. Let’s go through what it does, how it works, and what I noticed while using it.
What is HelloTalk?
HelloTalk is basically a social media–style language exchange app. Once I created my profile and set Italian as the language I wanted to practice, the app showed me a list of people who speak Italian and are learning English. The idea is simple: you help each other out through conversation.

How It Works
Inside the app, I could start text chats, send voice messages, or even make audio and video calls. Personally, I really liked sending short voice recordings—it felt like practicing Italian in a more natural way, but still low-pressure since I could re-record if I made a mistake.
There’s also a feature called Moments. Think of it like a feed where you can post in Italian about your day, your hobbies, or even a random thought. Other users can correct your writing or leave comments, which makes it feel like you’re part of a little Italian-speaking community.

Corrections & Learning Tools
One of the highlights for me was the corrections tool. If I wrote something in Italian with a mistake, my partner could highlight the wrong part in red and write the correction in green. Seeing the difference side by side was really useful.
There are also built-in tools like translations and transliterations, though some are limited unless you get the paid version.

Pros
What I liked most is that I could practice reading, writing, listening, and speaking all in one place. It’s flexible—you can just send a text if you’re busy, or have a full conversation when you have time. It also gave me a way to connect with native Italian speakers, which isn’t always easy to do in everyday life.

Cons
On the flip side, not every conversation goes very far. Sometimes chats stopped at “Hi, how are you?” and didn’t develop much more. Also, since this is a community-driven app, the quality of corrections depends on who you’re talking to—they’re learners too, not professional teachers.
Another thing is that some people use the app more like a dating platform, which can be distracting if you’re just there for language practice.
Final Thoughts
Overall, HelloTalk is a creative way to immerse yourself in Italian without leaving your home. It combines the feel of social media with the goal of language learning, so it’s easy to fit into your day.
But if you feel conversations stall too quickly, or you want more structure, it may not fully replace other learning tools.
