Language Learning is a skill just like any other, yet it is difficult because it is different from our daily activities and is ‘different’ from the other languages we have learned.

Similarly, Languages are different and have their own rules, making them seem complex and confusing. If you are starting, it is important to appreciate that learning a language is no walk in the park.

All you have to do is practice each day, and you will be able to pick up the language in no time. It just takes a lot of effort and practice.

Why is it so much harder to learn a language than any other type of skill?

To answer this, let’s look at what makes languages so different and, as a result, difficult to learn.

Languages are not taught in a classroom setting

The most obvious difference between languages and other skills is that they are not learned in a classroom setting.

If you want to learn to play the guitar, you can watch videos, read books and ask friends and family how they say things in their native language. You don’t do this with languages.

Millions speak people’s languages

The second thing that makes languages so difficult to learn is that millions speak them of people. Because so many people use the same language, it isn’t easy to find someone who uses it the same way you do.

If you are in a classroom with 30 other students, you will surely have someone who speaks the language you are learning with a different accent.

If you are traveling around the world, you are in luck, as you are bound to run into someone who speaks one of the world’s major languages.

As soon as you learn a new language, you need to start using it

Like any skill, once you have learned a new language, you need to start using it. How? You can’t just start chatting to people in the language the way you do in English.

It would help if you also started reading and listening to things in the language.

Learn basic vocabulary

Vocabulary is what allows you to communicate in the language. The basic words and phrases allow you to communicate with others.

Learning new vocabulary words is the most important thing you can do to improve your overall language skills.

The longer you put into learning new words, the more you will know about the language and, as a result, the better you will be at communicating with others. There are two ways to tackle vocabulary learning.

You can either learn a new word every day or look up a new word and add it to your vocabulary.

Learn one new word per day

This is the traditional way of learning vocabulary by looking up new words in a dictionary or listening to your teacher. With this method, you will only know one word per day, so you need to make sure that you write it down, so you don’t forget it.

Look up new words

With this method, you will learn lots of new words at once because you will look up the meaning of each one every day. This is a great method because it frees you up to do other things, such as read and listen to podcasts.

Build your listening and speaking skills

Listening is important because you will be able to understand the words others are saying if you can understand the grammar and structure of the sentences, for example, if someone is speaking French, Italian or Spanish.

You can practice your listening skills by listening to podcasts, watching TV shows and movies in the language you are learning and trying to get a sentence or phrase from them.

You can also try speaking in the language you are learning. This is important because it will help you to practice your pronunciation and, as a result, improve your fluency.

Try speaking to someone in a language you are trying to learn. You can do this in two ways: either speak to someone you know in the language or someone who has lived in that country for a while.

You can also try speaking in the language in a quiet place with one other person, so you don’t talk too quickly.

Don’t forget about writing practice

Writing is another important skill that you need to learn. This is because, unlike listening and speaking, you are writing the words in the language, so you must make sure you are putting them correctly.

This is also important for any professional career that requires you to write, such as an accountant, lawyer or journalist.

If you have a computer, there are many online tools and resources that you can use to practice in your target language. Some of the most popular is Italki, Memrise and Duo Lingo.
