How to use uguale
In today’s short post, we’re going to learn how to use uguale.
- The same
We use it when we want to refer to something/someone having the same identical characteristics of something/someone else.
Its meaning might be easy to remember since uguale sounds a bit like “equal”.
However, uguale might be a bit tricky to pronounce since it has 4 vowels. So, we recommend practicing its pronunciation.
For now, let’s just have a look at the two possible ways of using uguale:
Lo stipendio è uguale per tutti gli insegnanti.
The salary is the same for all the teachers.
Ho comprato un vestito uguale al tuo.
I bought a dress that’s identical to yours.
Uguale is an adjective since it describes a noun (a person, a thing, etc.).
However, unlike other adjectives there are only two variants, as you can see below:
- uguale for masculine AND feminine singular noun;
- uguali for masculine AND feminine plural nouns.
Have a look at the examples below and pay attention to when we use uguale and when we use uguali:
Il ritmo di questa canzone è sempre uguale.
The rhythm of this song is always identical.
La legge deve essere uguale per tutti.
The law has to be equal for everyone.
Questi cani sembrano uguali.
These dogs look identical.
Le nostre bambine sono uguali.
Our girls are identical.
If we want to be specific and say that something/someone is identical to something or someone else, we say uguale a.
The preposition “a” changes depending on the gender and number of the noun it refers to, so here are the other possible options:

This cake is identical to the one I made last week.
La mia macchina è uguale alla tua.
My car is identical to yours.
I capelli tinti non sono mai uguali ai capelli naturali.
Dyed hair is never identical to natural hair.
